czech republic - destination profile

The Czech Republic is a landlocked country in the true heart of Europe. It is a country of diverse natural beauty, living folklore traditions, and historical monuments that reflect a rich history. The legacies left us by our ancestors include monuments dating as far back as the Romanesque era, Gothic cathedrals, Baroque churches and palaces, ornate Renaissance houses and summer residences, fine examples of Cubist design and architecture, Jewish synagogues of various styles, Art Nouveau coffee houses, and winding cobblestone streets.

Though Prague might be the most obvious choice for a traveller seeking fascinating destinations in the Czech lands, the other areas of the country should not be missed. The countryside is dotted with castles, ruins of castles, and chateaux surrounded by lush parks.
The most eminent personalities of European and world science and art have left their indelible imprint on the country’s history. Mozart, Goethe, Kafka, Beethoven, Einstein, Tycho Brahe and Casanova are only a few of the numerous famous figures who were
connected with the Czech lands.

Apart from the capital city, PRAGUE, which is a must for any visitor, the Czech Republic has eleven other locations inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A plethora of cultural events are held throughout the country. Countless galleries that display works of local and foreign artists draw great numbers of tourists with frequently updated displays. A number of festivals and exhibitions of international merit take place in the country every year, together with popular sport events such as Grand Prix races, ice-hockey championships etc. Theatre and dance festivals are widely open to the public. The Prague Spring, Prague Autumn, and the Český Krumlov International Music Festival are just a few of the best-known music festivals, while film enthusiasts laud the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
